FAQs about Child Safeguarding at Al Byan

What do you mean by “child safeguarding”? Is it the same as “child protection”?
Child safeguarding is a big umbrella. It refers to the actions we take on behalf of children and community members to promote wellbeing, protect human rights, promote healthy development, and reduce the risk of harm to children. At Al Byan Group of Institutes, we recognize that a comprehensive approach to safeguarding works to prevent harm as well as respond to it. The term, “child protection” is related, but not the same as child safeguarding, and refers to the specific responsive actions taken by the school when we learn of harm to children. Harm can be defined as any action or inaction that negatively impacts a child’s physical, emotional, or mental well-being. Harm encompasses both direct harm, such as physical, emotional, sexual maltreatment, and neglect, and indirect harm, such as witnessing violence between parents or caregivers. Harm also refers to negative impacts of bias, harassment, discrimination, bullying, or exploitation, which can be inflicted online or in-person by an adult or by another child.
First and foremost, we abide by international conventions and relevant statutory child welfare legislation in all our safeguarding policies, procedures, and practices across Al Byan Group of Institutes. In defined circumstances, our administration is mandated to escalate and report serious concerns regarding harm, neglect, or maltreatment directly to designated child welfare authorities and statutory legal protection bodies. Beyond legal mandates, we hold ourselves to rigorous ethical standards in our duty of care, systematically allocating administrative, counseling, and faculty resources to reinforce this framework across all campuses. We understand that young individuals make mistakes, recognizing that restorative justice and guided behavioral correction are often far more impactful in repairing harm than purely punitive measures. Furthermore, we maintain a balanced approach between educational enrichment and risk management, embedding structured mitigation and safety protocols into all high-value student experiences, off-campus excursions, and cooperative institutional activities.

Across Al Byan Group of Institutes, core areas where we prioritize the prevention of harm and comprehensive risk mitigation include, but are not limited to:

  • Safe Recruitment & Vetting: Enforcing stringent screening, credential verification, and background checks across all academic, administrative, and support staff hiring procedures.
  • Campus & Field Safety Oversight: Maintaining rigorous health, physical safety, and security protocols across campus facilities, sports activities, and off-campus academic or co-curricular excursions.
  • Continuous Professional Training: Requiring comprehensive onboarding and annual refresher programs on child safeguarding, student protection policies, and emergency protocols for all faculty and staff.
  • Structured Mentorship & Academic Partnerships: Establishing clear operational guidelines and accountability measures for mentor interactions, peer tutoring programs, and external institutional collaborations.
  • Student Education & Awareness: Equipping students with age-appropriate guidance on personal boundaries, digital citizenship, healthy interpersonal relationships, and reporting mechanisms for unsafe behavior.

Reports of harm involving a student can arise through various channels and may be brought to the attention of any community member. Consequently, across Al Byan Group of Institutes, all faculty, administrative staff, and adult employees serve as mandatory reporters who are formally trained to escalate any concerns immediately to designated safeguarding leads and responders.

For students in our middle and senior sections, confidential and anonymous reporting channels are readily available, ensuring a secure avenue for individuals to disclose harm or distress if they feel hesitant to speak in person. Students are proactively guided on how to use these platforms responsibly, ensuring timely interventions while protecting student dignity and safety.

This framework explicitly defines key investigative roles, documentation and record-keeping protocols, institutional escalation pathways, and strict, time-bound response windows.

How to Report a Safeguarding Concern

  • Parents: Contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) of your child’s campus or the main Safeguarding Office.

  • Students: Talk to any teacher or staff member you trust, or report anonymously if you are in middle or high school.

  • Adults / Staff: Must report concerns directly using internal staff reporting channels, backed by full whistleblowing protection (anonymous adult reports are not accepted).

As a parent or caregiver, you play an important role in our safeguarding efforts, community-wide. Specifically, we ask that you do the following:

  • Follow campus access rules and keep your parent ID visible at all times while on campus
  • Abide by community norms in-person and on-line
  • Follow posted photos/videos instructions and refrain from taking images of students that are not your children without permission
  • Complete the parental absence form when traveling and leaving your child in the care of a non-custodial adult
  • Share a concern about the safety and/or wellbeing of a student with a Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Engage as an active partner with school in areas of wellbeing, safety, and academic support related to your child(ren).

The school engages in ongoing and robust parent engagement, awareness, and education in various ways in every division. In ELC and elementary school, for example, the counseling, dean, and psychologist teams run sessions on the Triple P Parenting Program in the Fall and Spring. Teams in middle school and high school run topic-specific workshops throughout the year on areas such as parenting in the digital age, addressing risky behavior such as alcohol and vaping use, and mental health support. All events are highlighted in the weekly eNews communication on Fridays.
